Department of Radiology

Department of Radiology at ASMC Lalitpur provides MBBS students with structured education in medical imaging, radiological anatomy and diagnostic interpretation through lectures, supervised clinical exposure, imaging demonstrations, case discussions and patient-centred learning.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Connecting Medical Imaging with Clinical Diagnosis

The Department of Radiology at Autonomous State Medical College, Lalitpur supports undergraduate medical education by helping MBBS students understand how medical imaging contributes to diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical decision-making and patient monitoring.
Students are introduced to the basic principles and clinical applications of radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Teaching focuses on selecting appropriate investigations, recognising normal structures and identifying important abnormalities in commonly encountered clinical situations.

Image-based learning helps students correlate radiological findings with anatomy, pathology, symptoms and physical examination. Students develop a systematic approach to reviewing common chest, abdominal, musculoskeletal, neurological and emergency images under faculty supervision.

The department also introduces radiation protection, contrast-media safety, patient preparation, informed consent and responsible use of diagnostic investigations. Students learn that imaging should be requested only when clinically appropriate and interpreted within the broader clinical context.

Through faculty guidance, integrated teaching, case discussions and continuous assessment, students develop the foundational imaging knowledge required for responsible general medical practice and further clinical training.

INSTITUTIONAL LEADERSHIP

Guidance from the Principal

The Principal provides institutional guidance to ensure that Radiology education, diagnostic learning and clinical integration contribute meaningfully to the scientific and professional development of MBBS students.

At ASMC Lalitpur, Radiology is recognised as an essential link between basic medical sciences and clinical practice. Medical imaging helps students visualise internal structures, understand pathological changes and correlate patient symptoms with objective diagnostic findings.

The institution encourages the department to combine structured theoretical teaching with supervised imaging demonstrations, clinical cases and interdisciplinary discussions. These methods help students understand the appropriate applications and limitations of different imaging modalities.

Students are guided to approach diagnostic investigations systematically and responsibly. Particular importance is given to patient preparation, informed consent, radiation protection, contrast safety, confidentiality and accurate clinical communication.

The institution promotes collaboration between Radiology and departments such as Anatomy, Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Emergency Medicine. This integrated approach helps students understand how imaging supports diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up.

Through academic guidance, clinical correlation and regular feedback, the department aims to prepare medical graduates who can request appropriate investigations, understand commonly encountered images and communicate relevant findings responsibly.

KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES

What MBBS Students Learn

Students develop a foundational understanding of medical imaging, appropriate investigation selection, systematic image review, common radiological findings, clinical correlation and patient-safety principles relevant to general medical practice.

Principles of Medical Imaging

Introduces the basic principles, applications, advantages and limitations of commonly used diagnostic imaging modalities.

Radiographic Interpretation

Develops a systematic approach to reviewing plain radiographs and recognising normal structures and significant abnormalities.

Chest Imaging

Introduces common chest X-ray views, image quality, normal anatomy and important cardiopulmonary findings.

Abdominal Imaging

Covers the basic radiological assessment of common abdominal symptoms, obstruction, perforation, calcification and organ abnormalities.

Musculoskeletal Imaging

Introduces the imaging appearance of bones and joints, fractures, dislocations, infections and common degenerative conditions.

Ultrasonography Fundamentals

Explains the basic principles and clinical applications of ultrasound in abdominal, pelvic, obstetric and emergency assessment.

CT and MRI Fundamentals

Introduces the applications, strengths, limitations and general safety considerations of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Neuroimaging

Develops awareness of common imaging approaches used for head injury, stroke, intracranial bleeding and other neurological conditions.

Emergency Imaging

Introduces the role of imaging in trauma, acute chest and abdominal conditions and other situations requiring timely clinical decisions.

Radiation and Contrast Safety

Covers radiation protection, pregnancy considerations, contrast-related risks, patient preparation and responsible investigation selection.

IMAGE-BASED CLINICAL LEARNING

Learning Through Radiology Demonstrations

Radiology demonstrations help MBBS students connect anatomy, pathology and clinical findings with diagnostic images. Under faculty guidance, students observe commonly used imaging modalities, practise systematic image review and discuss the clinical relevance, limitations and safety considerations of investigations.

Imaging Demonstrations

Students observe common radiographs, ultrasound images, CT scans and MRI studies while learning the basic purpose of each modality.

Systematic Image Review

Faculty demonstrate how to confirm patient details, assess image quality, identify anatomical structures and recognise important abnormalities.

Clinical Correlation and Safety

Case discussions connect imaging findings with symptoms, examination and laboratory results while reinforcing appropriate investigation selection and patient safety.

ACTIVE LEARNING

Teaching and Learning Method

ASMC departments combine structured instruction, supervised practical and clinical learning, interactive discussions, digital resources and regular assessment to develop medical knowledge, applied skills, critical thinking, professional behaviour and confidence among MBBS students.
