ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Advancing Mental Health Through Education and Compassionate Care
The Department of Microbiology at Autonomous State Medical College, Lalitpur provides MBBS students with a systematic understanding of microorganisms and their relationship with human health and disease. Microbiological knowledge helps students understand the causes, transmission, laboratory diagnosis, prevention and control of infectious diseases.
Teaching combines interactive lectures, laboratory practicals, microscopy, staining demonstrations, specimen-based discussions, clinical cases and integrated learning. Students learn about bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, together with the immune responses that protect the human body from infection.
The academic curriculum covers general microbiology, immunology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, clinical microbiology, antimicrobial susceptibility, infection prevention, hospital-associated infections and biomedical-waste management.
Practical sessions introduce students to microscopes, staining methods, microbial morphology, culture principles, specimen collection and interpretation of common microbiological reports. These activities develop observation, laboratory discipline, scientific reasoning and diagnostic understanding.
The department promotes laboratory safety, infection-control awareness, ethical conduct and responsible handling of biological material. Through structured assessment and regular faculty feedback, students develop the knowledge and professional values required for clinical education and patient care.
