ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Understanding Disease Through Scientific Investigation
The Department of Pathology at Autonomous State Medical College, Lalitpur provides MBBS students with a systematic understanding of the causes, mechanisms and consequences of disease. Pathology connects basic medical sciences with clinical medicine by explaining how cellular and tissue alterations produce recognisable clinical signs and laboratory findings.
Teaching combines interactive lectures, microscopy, haematology practicals, specimen demonstrations, case-based discussions, laboratory-report interpretation and integrated learning. Students examine normal and abnormal cells, tissues, blood findings and disease processes to develop diagnostic reasoning and scientific understanding.
The academic curriculum covers cell injury, inflammation, healing, circulatory disturbances, immune disorders, neoplasia, genetic and environmental diseases, haematology, clinical pathology and systemic pathology. Students are encouraged to connect pathological findings with clinical presentation, investigations, prognosis and treatment planning.
Practical sessions develop observation, identification, interpretation, documentation and analytical skills. Microscopy helps students recognise important tissue changes, while haematology and clinical-pathology exercises introduce common laboratory investigations and their diagnostic significance.
The department promotes scientific curiosity, laboratory discipline, quality awareness, ethical conduct and responsible handling of specimens and medical information. Through structured assessment and faculty feedback, students develop the knowledge and professional values required for clinical education and patient care.
