Department of Dentistry

Department of Dentistry at ASMC Lalitpur provides students with structured education in oral health, dental assessment and common conditions affecting the teeth, gums, oral cavity and maxillofacial region through interactive lectures, supervised dental OPD exposure, clinical demonstrations, case discussions and patient-centred learning.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Building Strong Foundations in Oral and Dental Healthcare

The Department of Dentistry at Autonomous State Medical College, Lalitpur supports undergraduate medical education and patient care by introducing students to the assessment, prevention and general management of common oral and dental conditions. Oral health is an important component of overall health and can influence nutrition, communication, appearance, confidence and quality of life.

Teaching covers the basic structure and function of the teeth, gums, oral mucosa, jaws and related maxillofacial structures. Students learn about dental caries, periodontal disease, oral infections, toothache, facial swelling, oral ulcers, dental trauma and other frequently encountered oral-health concerns.

During supervised dental OPD exposure, students observe focused history-taking, examination of the oral cavity, dental charting, identification of common lesions, interpretation of relevant investigations and preparation of clinical records. They are also introduced to the importance of recognising suspicious oral lesions and arranging timely specialist referral.

Faculty-led teaching connects oral-health conditions with anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery, ENT and community health. Students learn how systemic diseases, medicines, nutritional factors, tobacco use and personal hygiene may influence oral and dental health.

The department promotes prevention through oral-hygiene education, dietary counselling, tobacco-cessation awareness and early detection of disease. Emphasis is placed on patient dignity, informed consent, infection prevention, medicine safety, confidentiality and professional communication.

Clinical procedures are performed only by qualified professionals or by authorised learners under appropriate supervision. Through structured teaching, observation and faculty feedback, students develop the knowledge and professional responsibility needed to identify common dental problems and make appropriate referrals.
