Department of Anaesthesiology

The Department of Anaesthesiology at ASMC Lalitpur provides MBBS students with structured education in perioperative medicine, airway management, patient monitoring, pain relief, resuscitation and critical care through interactive lectures, supervised clinical exposure, skills demonstrations and competency-based learning.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Supporting Safe Care Before, During and After Surgery

The Department of Anaesthesiology at Autonomous State Medical College, Lalitpur supports undergraduate medical education by introducing students to the principles of anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, patient monitoring, pain management, resuscitation and critical care. The department helps students understand how safe anaesthetic care contributes to surgical procedures, diagnostic interventions and emergency management.

Teaching combines structured lectures, clinical demonstrations, case-based discussions, simulation and supervised observation in relevant clinical areas. Students learn the importance of pre-anaesthetic assessment, airway evaluation, physiological monitoring, medicine safety and recognition of perioperative complications.

During supervised clinical exposure, students observe how patients are assessed and prepared before procedures, monitored during anaesthesia and cared for during recovery. They are introduced to the principles of general, regional and local anaesthesia while understanding that anaesthetic procedures must be performed only by appropriately trained professionals.

The department also contributes to the teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen therapy, intravenous access, fluid management, postoperative pain relief and the early recognition of critically ill patients. These learning experiences strengthen students’ ability to respond responsibly in emergencies and seek timely senior assistance.

Patient safety, informed consent, dignity, privacy and effective communication remain central to departmental teaching. Through faculty guidance, interdisciplinary learning and regular assessment, students develop clinical vigilance, teamwork and professional responsibility relevant to general medical practice.

Patient safety Clinical vigilance Respect and dignity Ethical practice Evidence-based care Effective communication
DEPARTMENTAL LEADERSHIP

Guidance from the Head of Department

The Head of the Department provides academic and clinical leadership to ensure that Anaesthesiology education, supervised clinical exposure and departmental activities contribute meaningfully to the professional development of MBBS students and the delivery of safe, responsible patient care.

At ASMC Lalitpur, Anaesthesiology is recognised as an essential clinical discipline supporting surgical care, perioperative medicine, pain management, emergency response, resuscitation and critical care. Departmental teaching helps students understand the continuous assessment and physiological support required before, during and after medical and surgical procedures.

The department combines structured theoretical instruction with supervised observation of pre-anaesthetic assessment, airway evaluation, physiological monitoring, recovery care and emergency management. Skills demonstrations and case-based discussions help students connect their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology with practical clinical decision-making.

Students are guided to respect patient autonomy, obtain appropriate consent, protect privacy and follow infection-prevention and patient-safety protocols. Particular importance is given to clinical vigilance, accurate documentation, effective communication, interdisciplinary teamwork and timely senior intervention whenever patient deterioration is suspected.

The department remains committed to strengthening simulation-based learning, emergency preparedness, clinical observation and faculty-guided training. Our objective is to prepare responsible medical graduates who understand perioperative safety, recognise clinical emergencies and contribute appropriately to multidisciplinary patient care within their permitted level of competence.

KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES

What MBBS Students Learn

Students learn the fundamental principles of anaesthesia, perioperative assessment, airway care, physiological monitoring, pain relief, resuscitation and critical care while developing a responsible, safety-focused and team-based approach to patient management.

Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment

Introduces medical history, physical examination, review of investigations, risk identification and preparation of patients for anaesthesia.

Airway Assessment and Management

Develops awareness of airway anatomy, airway evaluation, oxygen delivery and the basic principles of maintaining a patent airway.

General Anaesthesia

Explains the fundamental stages, medicines, monitoring requirements and safety considerations associated with general anaesthesia.

Regional and Local Anaesthesia

Introduces the principles, common applications, benefits, limitations and safety considerations of regional and local anaesthetic techniques.

Physiological Monitoring

Covers the observation and interpretation of pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiration, temperature and other essential clinical parameters.

Anaesthetic Pharmacology

Introduces commonly used anaesthetic, analgesic and emergency medicines, with emphasis on safe use, major effects and potential adverse reactions.

Fluid and Blood Management

Explains basic principles of fluid therapy, blood loss assessment, transfusion awareness and maintenance of circulation during perioperative care.

Post-Anaesthesia Recovery

Introduces recovery-room observation, pain assessment, airway safety and recognition of postoperative nausea, bleeding or clinical deterioration.

Pain Management

Covers pain assessment and general principles of pharmacological, regional and supportive approaches to acute and postoperative pain relief.

Resuscitation and Emergency Response

Develops awareness of basic life support, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen therapy and early recognition of patients requiring urgent assistance.

SUPERVISED CLINICAL EXPOSURE

Learning Through Anaesthesiology Clinical Exposure

Supervised Anaesthesiology exposure helps MBBS students connect classroom knowledge with perioperative patient care. Students observe pre-anaesthetic evaluation, airway preparation, physiological monitoring, recovery-room care, pain assessment and emergency response while learning the importance of consent, confidentiality, teamwork and continuous patient safety.

Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment

Students observe how medical history, examination findings, investigations, allergies, medicines and clinical risks are reviewed before a planned procedure.

Airway and Monitoring Demonstrations

Faculty demonstrate airway assessment, oxygen-delivery equipment and the basic interpretation of routinely monitored physiological parameters.

Recovery and Risk Recognition

Students learn to observe recovery from anaesthesia and recognise airway difficulty, altered consciousness, uncontrolled pain or other signs requiring immediate senior attention.
